Which Signs of Aging Can Be Treated with Juvederm®?
Skin that contains sufficient amounts of beneficial proteins and sugars—like collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid—is smooth, full, and pliant. These are all qualities that we associate with a youthful look.
Collagen is a protein that provides strength and structure to the skin, while elastin provides elasticity, and hyaluronic acid helps the skin to retain moisture for a plump and healthy appearance. Skin lacking in collagen and these other important molecules, however, tends to lose volume and loosen, creating hollows and creases. Our face may also lose its defined contours and shape as this volume diminishes along with underlying bone.
Wrinkles that are caused by a loss of collagen due to aging—or damage to the skin from environmental stressors like sun exposure, the force of gravity, and other factors—are known as static wrinkles. These tend to show on the face whether it’s moving or at rest (as opposed to dynamic wrinkles, which appear most prominently when the face is in motion).
Juvederm® fillers are specifically designed to counteract static wrinkles.
Why Choose the Dermatology Group of Arkansas for Juvederm®?
Finding a skilled and experienced injector is the key to achieving the most natural-looking, stunning results from Juvederm® fillers. Each of our injectors at the Dermatology Group of Arkansas has the dual qualities necessary to provide naturally beautiful looks administered safely and with patient comfort in mind: an artistic eye and a rigorous medical background.
How Does Juvederm® Work?
You may be wondering: What is Juvederm® made of and what is Juvederm® used for? Facial fillers in the Juvederm® collection are substances that are injected beneath the skin at varying depths to fill in wrinkles or augment facial features such as the cheeks and lips. The added volume beneath the surface makes the skin appear smoother and more youthful in areas that have lost collagen, healthy fat, and more due to aging, sun damage, and other factors.
The main ingredient in all of the fillers in the Juvederm® family is hyaluronic acid. This is a transparent, gooey substance that your body produces naturally to provide a cushion and lubricant for various tissues. It helps the skin to retain moisture.
By introducing hyaluronic acid back into the skin, Juvederm® fillers help to temporarily restore volume that was lost over time. These fillers can treat numerous types of cosmetic concerns. Since there are many different types of looks you can achieve with these facial fillers, it’s important to talk to us about your goals and expectations. We will begin by assessing your face, and you can tell us about which areas bother you so we can come up with a treatment plan.
What Are the Different Types of Fillers in the Juvederm® Collection?
We sometimes have patients ask us: “Are there different types of Juvederm®?” Yes, there are many different options available when it comes to facial fillers, and it’s important to choose the best product to achieve the results you want. There are multiple Juvederm® formulas in the product line, each especially suited for treating a specific sign of aging. As mentioned above, all of them feature hyaluronic acid as their active ingredient, creating a gel that fills hollow spaces below the surface to reduce the depth of wrinkles.
Ultra/Ultra Plus
Many people develop creases that are technically known as nasolabial folds, but are more commonly referred to as “parenthesis lines.” These develop to the right and left of the mouth and nose. Juvederm® Ultra is made up of finer particles that work for subtler correction, while Ultra Plus features larger particles suitable for smoothing more severe lines.
Voluma®
Ideal for the mid-face, Juvederm Voluma® rounds out the apples of the cheeks, which can deflate over time and give the face an overall gaunt look. This formula adds lift and structure to the cheeks to enhance the shape of the face. Mid-face volume is also important for holding up facial tissues that would sag and form jowls without it. Voluma® is also used to temporarily augment the chin, providing a more noticeable contour and definition.
Vollure®
Similar to the Ultra fillers, Vollure® is intended for addressing facial lines, including nasolabial folds, vertical marionette lines, and wrinkles around the mouth. Vollure® bridges the gap between heavier, more robust fillers like Voluma® and lightweight fillers like Volbella®.
Volbella®
Lips that need volume might have grown thinner over time or be naturally slim and not that noticeable. Juvederm® Volbella works for patients with either problem, creating a plumper, more luscious pout. This is a lighter, thinner, and refined filler that is spreadable and ideal for small areas such as the lips. It also reduces lines around the mouth.

Is Juvederm® Right for Me?
Who is a good candidate for Juvederm®? On the other hand, who should not use Juvederm®?
Most men and women would be good candidates for facial fillers in the Juvederm® collection. However, these treatments are best suited for patients who are physically healthy and non-smokers, who maintain a positive outlook, and who have realistic expectations for the improvements they can get from injectable treatments.
Some patients want to treat general early signs of aging on their face or some types of scarring, while others want to address a specific area or feature.
It’s important to remember that Juvederm® will temporarily improve your appearance, but the filler eventually is metabolized by the body, after which the face will return to its previous appearance. This means that maintenance sessions are required for a lasting look, which is an appealing choice for those who want results without surgery.
How Do You Prepare for Juvederm®?
Is there anything you should not do before getting fillers? Our team will guide you on what to do and what to avoid before getting Juvederm®. Regardless of which type of facial filler you choose, preparation will be basically the same. Before you have Juvederm® injections, you should avoid consuming alcohol for at least 24 hours, avoid using anti-inflammatory or blood thinning medications such as aspirin or ibuprofen for two weeks prior because they can increase the risk of bruising or swelling and avoid smoking. If a rash, cold sore, or another lesion develops in the treatment area, it will be best to reschedule your Juvederm® treatment.
What Is the Procedure for Juvederm®?
Patients will naturally be curious about what to expect when getting Juvederm® injections. Here’s what you can expect when you choose Juvederm® in 2023.
Our injectors at the Dermatology Group of Arkansas apply their training and experience to make the treatment process as pleasant as possible. The number of injections made will depend on which areas are being treated. Juvederm® usually only causes minor discomfort.
Each injection may feel like a tiny pinch to the skin, but we can also work with anyone who has particular concerns about dealing with the minimal discomfort. Applying ice after the injections will help to alleviate some of the swelling.
What Is the Recovery Timeline for Juvederm®?
One of the advantages of treatments with Juvederm® is that the results appear right away.
Any cosmetic treatment involving injections will result in some side effects, and Juvederm® is no different. Patients should expect some redness, tenderness, and mild swelling, all of which are temporary. Our team will provide you with post-treatment instruction to maximize your results. Sometimes a series of initial injections will be needed to optimize results for these fillers.
What Are the Best Practices for Juvederm® Aftercare?
Patients should avoid significant movement, massages, or placing too much pressure on the area where they were injected with Juvederm®. Strenuous exercise should be avoided for the first 24 hours, and patients should avoid too much exposure to heat and sunlight for 72 hours.
Despite the minor side effects, Juvederm® does not require any social downtime. You can get back to your typical planned activities right away. In the hours and days following your injections, after any swelling resolves, you will see the long-term results of your treatment.
See which areas of the face our injectors treat with Juvederm® at the Little Rock area’s Dermatology Group of Arkansas. The formulations we offer are ideal for reducing creases on the lower face (Ultra/Ultra Plus), rounding the apple of the cheeks and creating a subtle lift (Voluma®), addressing fine lines around the mouth (Vollure®), and plumping the lips for a naturally fuller look (Volbella®).
How Long Do Juvederm® Results Last?
While all Juvederm® fillers are long lasting, some are longer lasting than others. Ultra and Volbella® can be expected to last up to one year, Vollure® generates results that are visible for up to 18 months, and Voluma® is good for up to two years. Your body will gradually metabolize the filler, but a new round of injections can restore the desired volume once again. Patients will need regular maintenance injections with Juvederm® to preserve the results. Maintaining good overall health and using the right skin care products or treatments will help to maximize results.
Are There Other Ways to Enhance the Appearance of the Skin in the Little Rock Area?
The lines that Juvederm® smooths are known as static wrinkles, because they develop in places where volume loss and natural aging tend to be seen as etched-in wrinkles. Dynamic wrinkles, on the other hand, are associated with repetitive muscle action during facial expressions and so require a different solution. BOTOX® is ideal for this, relaxing the muscles and leading to a more youthful face.
Both types of injectables can be used together for customized results. Our team also provides another, similar type of hyaluronic acid filler collection known as Restylane®. Sculptra® is a biostimulatory injection, which is a different type of dermal filler that works by gradually encouraging the growth of new collagen in the skin to create a more volumized, youthful, and balanced appearance.
